Proposal to increase the membership of The Humanist Association of Ireland

TARGET:- 70,000 MEMBERS
1. Get well known people / celebrities to become patrons. To appeal to all age groups
a. Seek out humanists in the Oireachtas
2. Regular spot on Local radio and TV
3. Create special National events/occasions with themes or seasonal timings.
4. Create local events to support local humanist groups
5. Have Humanist groups in universities
a. Work with the AHS (The Federation of Atheist Humanist and Secular Student Societies) network http://www.ahsstudents.org.uk/
6. Attend county shows in the summer
7. Leaflets in Libraries / town halls / wedding shops / baby clothes shops / funeral directors / Doctors / hospitals / community centres for ceremonies and chaplaincy
8. Use the press.
a. Prepare an advert for Humanism with cut out form asking for further information
b. Regular Press releases
c. Regular articles in humanist section in papers.
d. Press /public relations officer.
e. Need list of papers in Ireland
9. Advertising in papers, radio, television. Consider an “There is no God” advert or similar on buses in the same way as the BHA in England. Similar to HAI advert on the Dart
10. Weekly column in papers of Humanist news
11. Ask editors to mention our celebrant and chaplaincy services
12. Have programme of speakers throughout the year
a. Available to all local Humanist groups
b. A nationwide speaking tour of Ireland using hotel rooms et al and advertising the event through the press, radio and TV
13. Speak at local special interest groups such as
a. Corporate events
b. Women’s networks,
c. Community groups.
d. Clubs
e. Make contact with suitable Organisers, Officers of clubs, Social Workers, or others who have dealings with various groups, get their advice as to the best approach.
14. Provide advice and/or training for public speaking and media contact for those chosen to represent our views.
15. Set up more information tables throughout Ireland in the same way as the GPO in O’Connell Street
16. Link in with all interested groups around Ireland and the world
17. Find out the cost of appointing a professional marketing company to look at ways to increase membership
18. Co-operate with corporate sponsors for national local events to produce income /donations
19. Cross fertilisation with other groups in Ireland and the world
a. To share resources
b. Share speakers
c. Co-ordinate campaigns
20. Lobbying campaign with local and national politicians on all our topics asking for personal help and sanctioning events /policies
21. Make better use of the existing membership. More communication with them to improve the relationship. Persuade HAI members to speak to their family, friends and neighbours to join.
22. Follow up on the 300 members lapsed since 2009 and try to find out what deterred them from continuing. i.e. we have 400 members but have lost 300 ?? Why ??
NOTES:-
Before all these ideas can be made to work the very minimum requirements are:-
A fully functioning web site – currently anticipated in May 2013
Printed literature in the form of leaflets / articles /
Press releases
Trained personnel for media
Costed and agreed budget for the above
Enough people to make up a committee and run this programme or use a professional marketing company
Anticipated rollout of programme would be mid 2013
